Be Calm with No Fear

At Integrated Dentistry, we understand that some people are afraid to go to the dentist. That’s why we provide a calming environment and a friendly team to help you feel at ease. We also have a variety of treatment options, including sedation dentistry, to help make your dental experience even more comfortable. If you’ve been avoiding the dentist, sedation dentistry could be the solution you’ve been looking for. Whether you just need a routine cleaning or a brand-new smile, sedation dentistry can make your experience relaxing and help solve your dental issues.

One of the biggest things that prevents people from getting the dental care they need is a phobia or fear of getting dental work done. We offer a range of dental sedation options, from a mild sedation where we take the edge off, to a more complete IV sedation which makes it so people don’t remember the procedure.

Reduce Dental Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry

There’s a concept in dentistry called the vicious cycle of dental fear. Patients may miss an appointment for a dental cleaning and evaluation because life gets busy or they’re sick; if they don’t reschedule, as time passes, they become nervous about visiting the dentist. Will the dental cleaning be uncomfortable? Will I need extensive dental work? This anxiety causes them to delay going to the dentist even more. Months can easily become years, and the fear of being judged, of finding out you need restorative dentistry, and of pain while you’re in the dentist’s chair becomes crippling.

If this sounds familiar, we’re here to help you break the cycle of dental anxiety. We offer three levels of sedation dentistry, gentle care, pain-free dental cleanings, and a team of understanding dental professionals to make your experience at our office a positive one.

Three Levels of Sedation to Meet Your Needs

  • Minimal Sedation

For patients with dental anxiety. We use nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) to help patients relax during their treatments. You will be awake and able to respond to the dentist’s directions.

  • Moderate Sedation

For patients who need a step up from nitrous and dental anesthesia. With conscious oral sedation, Dr. Johnson will prescribe a medication for you to take prior to your appointment. Patients are relaxed and will most likely not remember the procedure.

  • IV Sedation

This is the most comprehensive method of dental sedation. Patients are put on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened and will rarely remember anything. Your safety is our highest priority, which is why we have a nurse anesthetist on staff to administer and monitor IV sedation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

What sedation is used for dentistry?

Our Bentonville dental practice offers three levels of sedation dentistry: nitrous oxide, conscious oral sedation, and IV sedation. Each of these sedation methods is safe, effective, and administered according to American Dental Association guidelines.

Will I feel any pain with dental sedation?

Dental sedation helps you feel relaxed during a dental procedure, but it’s local anesthesia that helps ensure that you also feel no pain. We use sedation and local anesthesia together to make your dental procedure a comfortable, stress-free experience.

What does dental sedation feel like?

Each form of dental sedation is different. With nitrous oxide, you will be awake and aware of your surroundings, but you’ll feel calm and relaxed. You may notice that your
arms and legs feel tingly or heavy, and some patients also experience feelings of lightheadedness. Conscious oral sedation is a deeper level of relaxation; you may not fully remember your procedure afterwards and you are likely to feel “out of it” until the sedation wears off. Patients who have IV sedation feel as if they are sleeping and typically have no memory of their dental treatment.

Is dental sedation safe?

We go above and beyond to ensure our patients’ safety. If you require IV sedation for your appointment, it is administered by a nurse anesthetist. We use the same monitoring equipment that hospitals use during your procedure.

Are you asleep during IV sedation?

IV sedation is sometimes referred to as twilight sedation because you are on the edge of consciousness, between wakefulness and sleep. Most patients feel as if they have slept through their procedure with IV sedation, even though medically speaking, they are still conscious. They have no awareness of what is happening and no memory of their procedure once IV sedation has worn off. When patients want to be “put to sleep” or “sleep through” a dental procedure, IV sedation is what we use.

Which is safer, IV sedation or general anesthesia?

IV sedation is safer than general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, you are fully unconscious and require breathing support. IV sedation and general anesthesia are sometimes confused, but they are very different and general anesthesia has more risk involved, which is why it’s only used in a hospital setting.
